Certificate in Photography

This course aims to guide beginners to build up a strong foundation and understanding in digital photography; achieving a good eye in photography aesthetics using various subjects, for example, Land/Cityscape, Architecture, Street and Travel. Learners will gain knowledge and skills to produce high quality and professional photographic images through a combination of technical and aesthetic applications. They will also be introduced to basic digital imaging techniques to photo-enhance their digital images. Learners will be guided throughout the entire module and during project execution.

Module 1 – Fundamentals of Digital Photography
(8 sessions x 3 hours)


This module introduces the importance of photography composition in relation to camera operations and settings. Learners will be guided to execute these functions effectively to achieve a good photographic image in various situations and lighting conditions. Learners will also be introduced to Adobe Lightroom to manage and enhance their digital photos.

Module Content:
  • An introduction to the basic concepts of photography with a thorough focus on the camera.
  • Use the basics settings and modes on the camera, and tips on how to use them effectively.
  • Master basic composition to take great photographs.
Software: Adobe Photoshop / Lightroom


Module 2 – Design Elements in Photography
(8 sessions x 3 hours)


This module provides an introduction to the methodology of design elements in photography. It will help learners to understand the creative principles required to produce interesting and aesthetically stunning photographs. Skills in photo-enhancement via Adobe Photoshop will also be taught in this module.

Module Content:
  • Develops basic camera operation skills in using manual controls such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, metering, white balance.
  • Develops observation skills in looking at objects, people and places to create compelling photograph.
  • Examines and captures the ways light and colors creates moods and narratives in images.
  • An introduction to photography aesthetics with a thorough various method of seeing.
  • Apply design elements effectively to create beautiful photographs.

Our Trainers

 

Arron Teo

Arron Teo is a dedicated educator with more than 15 years of teaching experience in art and photography. He is currently an Adjunct Lecturer at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, imparting his 2D Visual Art & Photography knowledge to tertiary and certificate students. He was invited to conduct an art & photography workshop for MOE teachers at Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the aRts since 2014. Arron’s photographs have been awarded, exhibited and published locally & internationally. His works have been featured in various photobooks & magazines. The Singapore Art Gallery Guide featured his photo-documentary works from 2010 until their final printed copy in late 2016. Arron enjoys photographing people and behind-the-scene events. He was also commissioned by celebrities, government and corporate organisations for portraiture and photo-documentary assignments locally and overseas.



Marvin Tang

Marvin Tang, born in Singapore in 1989, uses photography, moving image, and object-based installations to visualise social phenomena manifested by systems of power and control. His works often undermine conventional representations of nature and question the linearity of historical narratives. He is currently pursuing research in plantation societies in 1900s Malaya and greening as national infrastructures.

His works have been presented internationally at the Thessaloniki PhotoBiennale, Greece, GETXOPHOTO International Image Festival, Spain, and Nooderlicht International Photofestival, Groningen, Netherlands. He is also part of SUPERHERO ME, a ground-up inclusive arts movement based in Singapore.



Eric Loh

Eric is a photographer and educator based in Singapore. As a photographer, his works include interior, architecture, food, and corporate portraits. His accolades include the Black & White Spider Awards and International Color Awards. With 15 years of experience in darkroom photography, Eric is passionate about reviving this analogue medium to a wider audience as a relief to screen fatigue in the digital age. 







Sherman Tan Huai Tse

Sherman is a designer with over 20 years of experience in the creative industry and specialises in integrated design and marketing communications, digital marketing, corporate branding, web design and content creation. Sherman graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Design) from the University of Western Sydney and is the founder of DPI Communications, a design and marketing agency specializing in BTL design, post-production printing and digital marketing solutions. He is currently an adjunct lecturer with Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), teaching digital imaging. Sherman is also a certified WIX partner who has developed, and designed many successful e-commerce websites.

Course schedules for May 2025 intake will be published in January 2025.

There will be several day and night time outdoor shoots on weekends for each module (dates to be confirmed). Each outdoor shoot will replace one of the scheduled lessons.
