Ceramics with Japanese Techniques

(8 sessions X 3 hours)

This course is designed for learners who are passionate about ceramics and ready to experiment and combine hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques, along with three specific Japanese techniques, namely:
  • Kurinuki: Master the art of carving hollowed textures for a distinctive aesthetic.
  • Hakeme: Learn the skilful application of slip decoration to add visual intrigue.
  • Nerikomi: Discover the magic of mixing coloured clays to create stunning patterns within the clay.

This is a perfect opportunity to expand and refine your ceramic knowledge and create unique, expressive pieces. This course is only for learners who have successfully completed both the Ceramics (Level 1) and Ceramics (Level 2).

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the ceramics process, and the difference between clay and ceramics.
  • Acquire advanced techniques of hand-building and wheel-throwing.
  • Apply various techniques to achieve complexity in their artworks.
  • Demonstrate the use of a variety of clay types in their artworks.
  • Outline a basic understanding of Japanese ceramic knowledge and techniques.
  • Produce 10-12 pieces of ceramic artwork at the end of the course.

A digital certificate will be issued upon successful course completion, which requires a minimum attendance rate of 75%.

Our Trainers

 
Hans Chew

With more than a decade of experience working with ceramics, Hans possesses a deep understanding of the possibilities and limitations of the clay medium. He is currently a practising artist who works primarily in the medium of clay.

Hans attained his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Tama Art University (Tokyo, Japan) from the department of Ceramic, Glass and Metal crafts with a major in Ceramics. During his time spent in Japan, he had the experience of working and learning ceramics in numerous pottery towns such as Mashiko and Shigaraki where he worked as a workshop assistant at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park residency facility. He also had the privilege of learning under the late Masakazu Kusakabe, who was an internationally renowned experimental wood kiln builder. Hans has also actively participated in numerous group exhibitions in countries such as Japan, Singapore, China and Italy.

Leveraging his background and understanding of ceramics, he often challenges his students to approach the medium from different angles to gain and develop a personal relationship with their work.
