Ceramics (Level 2)

(8 sessions x 3 hours)

This course aims to introduce the basics of ceramics wheel-throwing with fundamental techniques such as wedging, centring, trimming and glazing. Learners will be guided to develop the ability to apply knowledge of principles relating to space, structure, proportions, composition and textures to their artwork in the form of mugs, bowls and side plates. This course is recommended for enthusiasts who have completed the Ceramics (Level 1) course and wish to further their exploration of ceramics making with the pottery wheel.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:
  1. Learn to work with clay on the pottery wheel.
  2. Acquire basic ceramic wheel throwing skills such as wedging, centring, throwing and trimming.
  3. Create ceramics artworks that demonstrate an understanding of aesthetic principles.
Techniques Taught
This course focuses on wheel-throwing techniques such as wedging, centring, throwing, trimming and glazing. 

Number and size of works produced per learner
Each learner will be allowed to create and produce up to 6 pieces of ceramic works. Each work is limited to 20 cm (L) x 20 cm (B) x 20 cm (H).

Quality of works
Our technician will take every precaution and care to ensure the best possible outcomes for your ceramic works. However, inadvertent mistakes and misfires happen, and CLE will not be responsible for undesired/inconsistent results or damaged pieces. There will be no course fee refunds or replacement of ceramic works should the final artwork not meet your expectations.

Safe Management Measures, if any, should be adhered to at all times. 
For the safety and well-being of all learners, rules and regulations on safety practices should be respected and adhered to at all times.  
CLE will not be liable for any learners’ injuries or illnesses throughout their course of study.


Our Trainers

 

Lee Shen Lung

Shen Lung holds a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois (USA) and a Bachelor of Science in Ceramics from University of Evansville, Indiana (USA).

Shen Lung is currently a full-time ceramics artist at Jalan Bahar Clay Studios and teaches ceramics as an adjunct lecturer at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Previously, she taught ‘Introduction to Arts’ and ‘Beginning Ceramics – Handbuilding’ at Southern Illinois University.

In 2000, Shen held her first solo exhibition at the University Museum in Carbondale, Illinois. She has also showcased her works in several exhibitions in the USA and Singapore, the most recent one being the Singapore Clay Festival in 2021.



Chang Shun Yee

Chang Shun Yee graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) with a Diploma in Fine Arts (major in ceramics) in 2013. She has a keen interest in sharing her knowledge and skills of ceramics-making with the public. 


Shun Yee has been actively conducting workshops at government schools, private studios, dragon kilns, and NAFA for the past 10 years. Her audiences range from lower primary students to senior citizens. She is well-versed in clay-making techniques such as handbuilding, throwing and slip casting, and often explores new and creative ways of creating ceramics.

We are open from Monday to Friday (excluding Public Holidays).
