A recipient of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) Singapore Foundation Culture Award 2007, Noor Effendy Ibrahim has served as a member of the Singapore National Arts Council (NAC) Board from 2004 to 2006 (7th term). He also received the NAC Cultural Fellowship 2014 and was the fifth Artistic Director of The Substation (2010-2015), Singapore’s first independent contemporary art space. He had also served as the Artistic Director of Teater Ekamatra, a Singapore-based contemporary Malay Theatre company, from 2001 to 2006.

Effendy is an arts educator and was a Senior Academic Staff at the School of Technology for the Arts, Republic Polytechnic Singapore, from 2007 to 2010. He has been an adjunct lecturer since 2010 at various institutions such as National Institute of Education, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, LaSalle College of the Arts and DIGIPEN Institute of Technology.

Effendy is a multi-hyphenated interdisciplinary arts practitioner with practice ranging from director, playwright, performance artist, theatre actor, curator, producer, and set and production designer. His art practice and career is primarily based in Singapore and spans over more than 30 years to date. He currently creates interdisciplinary performances with his Singapore-based loose art collective Very Shy Gurl by fendy.

Effendy completed his GCE ‘O’ Levels at Raffles Institution (1989, Singapore), and GCE ‘A’ Levels at Victoria Junior College (1991, Singapore) where he was in the second cohort of the Theatre Studies and Drama ‘A’ Level programme. He went on to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2000, IL, US), and a Master of Arts in Contemporary Practice from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts-University of Huddersfield (2007, Singapore) where he received the NAFA Scholarship and the 2007 NAFA Best Graduate Award Visual Arts: MA Contemporary Practice.
