2013 , Young Artist Award
Born in Singapore in 1979, Zulkarnaen (also known by his artist moniker ZERO) is a visual artist with a ‘graffiti-esque‘ aesthetic. He graduated with a Diploma in Visual Communications from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2000 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours (Painting) from the LASALLE College of the Arts in 2008. He is the founder of RSCLS, an artist collective that seeks to evolve and develop urban art. Zul is actively involved in public talks, workshops and mentorship, as well as participation in exhibitions at public and private institutions, both locally and internationally. His art revolves around street culture, pop culture and current affairs; constantly creating dialogue and social commentary through them. His work constantly evolves as he tries to integrate the function of design and advertising within the framework of conceptual and traditional fine arts. He has been involved in numerous events and exhibitions and has been an integral part in the growth of RSCLS since its formation in late 2003 and was selected as candidate nominee for President’s Young Artist Awards in 2005. A practicing artist since completion of his National Service in early 2003, Zul is part of The Substation's Associate Artists Programme Alumni and has been teaching at the LASALLE College of the Arts since 2009.
