Chinese Seal Engraving (Level 1)

(4 sessions x 3 hours)

This course aims to equip learners with the skills of Chinese seal engraving, a distinct Chinese art form.  Participants will acquire varying skills of seal engravement, working towards the design and creation of their name seals. Using normal stone seals and traditional seal script, they will engrave seals with both negative and positive engraving methods and design a pictorial animal seal. Skills learnt can also be applied to professionally enhance personal artwork such as Chinese Calligraphy or Chinese Ink painting.

Course Content:
  • Differentiate between a positive and negative engraving seal design.
  • Learn two engraving methods, 冲刀 and 切刀.
  • How to design a proper Chinese Seal with the traditional Seal script.


Our Trainers

 

Sonas Lim Sia Kwoon


Sonas Lim is a distinguished alumnus of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and a local Arts Practitioner specialising in Chinese art.  He studied Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting and Chinese seal engraving under the tutelage of renowned local multi-disciplinary artist, Mr Wee Beng Chong. 

Sonas achieved NAFA’s Fine Art Best Drawing Award and was conferred a distinction in his Diploma in Fine Arts studies in 2003. In that same year and the following, he participated in numerous art competitions and achieved the Merit award for Overseas Category in the International Cultural Exchange Jill Sackler Cup Chinese Calligraphy Competition held in China. Additionally, he received the Della Butcher (Merit) Award, the Open Category Merit award in the Southeast District Project Search Arts Competition Painting, and the Open Category Merit award in Tan Tze Chor Art Competition.  In 2017, Sonas was awarded a Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese as an International Language from Fudan University, Shanghai.
