What a fabulous evening! Our grand 85th Anniversary Gala dinner at Capella Singapore on 2 September 2023 was a magnificent highlight of an entire year of celebrations. Themed ‘Bold & Gold’, this significant commemorative event was graced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Mr Lawrence Wong.

The evening was a multi-sensory experience that showcased NAFA's community of outstanding talents. Several aspects of the gala were created by students and alumni, from the collage of the photo wall (by NAFA alumna, Elisa Tan, who incorporated the works of NAFA alumni and students), the animation on LED screen (by NAFA alumna, Jasslyne Oh), the headgear worn by the student performers to the specially designed hand-crafted mannequins as part of the table decorations (by students from the Faculty of Art & Design, led by Head, Special Projects Unit, Xin Xiaochang).

We thanked our Eminent Patrons for their generous support to NAFA. Lecturers, students and alumni from the School of Music and the School of Dance livened the event with captivating performances, which culminated in an exciting live auction segment, helmed by esteemed auctioneer Mr Marcello Kwan, Head of Modern and Contemporary Art, Asia, at Bonhams, based in Hong Kong. Up for auction were iconic works by distinguished artists like Cultural Medallion recipient Han Sai Por, Tay Bak Chiang, Boo Sze Yang and many more.

NAFA’s School of Music presented a performance arranged by NAFA’s School of Music alumnus, Lim Han Quan: Yizhu Dance Music, also known as Yizhu Wuqu, is a traditional form of Chinese dance music with deep historical roots tracing back to the Tang Dynasty. For this special celebration, Han Quan has reimagined the music for electone and pipa, seamlessly bridging traditional and contemporary sounds. The pipa virtuoso, Wang Siyuan, is a student in NAFA's Master of Performance programme and a musician of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra.

Pia Angela Paz Custodio (graduating Diploma in Dance student) and Brandon Tang (NAFA alumnus and recipient of the NAFA Best Graduate Award 2021) from NAFA’s School of Dance performed a pas de deux from Kathabi, a full-length dance theatre piece showcasing the pre-colonial stories behind the traditional weaving practices of the Itneg Illaud Tribe from the northern mountainous regions of the Philippines. The performance was choreographed by NAFA Senior lecturer, Dr Filomar Cortezano Tariao, in collaboration with the University of the Philippines and the Itneg weavers.
